1FRAME IT Use large planters to frame the doorway of your house. You can also hang planters with trailing vines on either side of your doorway, or put pots with climbing vines at the base of a trellis.
2 PLANT BY NUMBERS The rule of odd numbers in interior decorating relates to all arrangements of objects, including flower pots, indoors or outdoors. This means that three or five flower pots, arranged together, will be more appealing than two or four of them.
3 SOFTEN THE EDGES A large planter box with overhanging plants helps soften the hard edges of an area. If you have sharp edges that interrupt the flow of an area, whether they are the edges of garden stairs or the corners of your decks, place a planter there. Fill the planters with ivy to conceal the sharp edges and to add a touch of green to the area.
4 DRAW THE LINE Creating paths and borders provides a distinction between your patio or terrace and your lawn. Instead of using an edge border or built-in boxes, you can always create the effect with containers. You can use an entire row of matching containers, or clusters of different sizes and shapes. Any of these options will create a distinction between your living space and the openness of the rest of your property.
5 A LITTLE DRAMA Matching pots planted with ornamental grass lend drama to a driveway or path.
6 BARE NECESSITIES An arrangement of hanging planters can cheer up a bare wall. Hang an even number for a formal look, an odd number for a more relaxed feel.
7 NOT QUITE THE SAME All the same shape, but different colors or materials.
8 BREAK IT UP A plain wall can dominate an area with its monotony and size. Large containers can create color and pattern against a blank wall.
9 GROW UP Plants climbing up a trellis create a privacy screen and separate spaces while also providing a beautiful touch.
10 SIZE MATTERS Arrange your flower pots in various heights. A container grouping will quickly fall into place if the tallest element is placed in the back of the grouping.
